Tyrell Davis
Cycling Beyond Boundaries Athlete
Meet the amazing Tyrell Davis, a 12-year-old with Achondroplasia and a personality that shines as bright as the sun! In May 2021, Tyrell received a video from Dr. Jacqui Bunge, featuring the incredible achievement of Chris Nikic, the first athlete with Down Syndrome to complete an Ironman race.
With the guidance of Jacqui, his journey began with a dip in the pool at the end of May. Just a year ago, Tyrell couldn’t swim and was terrified of even getting into the water. However, with weekly sessions led by Ashley le Roux, Jacqui Bunge, and Andrew Crowe, Tyrell’s swimming skills improved over time, and so did his confidence.
In June 2021, after a late Friday evening filled with calls and favours, she managed to register Tyrell for his first Duathlon. Tyrell accomplished an incredible feat: running 1.25km, cycling 10.13km, and then running another 2.5km. Prior to the Duathlon, Tyrell’s longest run was 200m, and his furthest bike ride was 4km. The sheer emotion on Tyrell’s face after crossing that finish line was beyond words.
